Question: Block text messages from email addresses on iPhone

I'm getting spam text messages that show an email address as the source. Is there a way to block all messages that come from email addresses? The send button is green, so the source of the text message is not using iMessage, it looks like.

No, you can't do that. You'll need to block individual addresses.

It sounds like those solutions only block that specific email address that is sending the text message. I want to be able to block all text messages that come from any email address -- that is, block all email addresses from sending me text messages.

Yeah. I don't know the reason, but the "MESSAGE FILTERING" only has the option "Filter Unknown Senders" and not "Unknown & Spam" for me. I wonder if there is a setting somewhere that is causing this difference in my iPhone. I have the latest iOS version.

I haven't found that the Filter Unknown feature works very well, especially on messages that come from email addresses.

Hello Shinehah,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with blocking a message. Since it is an email, address, you have two options.

1. You should have the option in the info section to block the email. If not, you can save the email address as a contact, and then block it. This article will help for either option: Block phone numbers and contacts on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

2. You can also just hide alerts from this email. This article talks about this in the section titled "Turn on Hide alerts" Use Messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Thanks and have a wonderful day.

Hi Shinehah,

Try this method to block unknown and junk text messages if your system is at iOS 11 or above.

Go to Settings -> Messages, scroll down to "Message Filtering" section and click into "Unknown & Spam". Enable "Filter Unknown Senders" and SMS Filtering.

This should turn off iMessage notifications if the text comes from addresses that are not in your contacts, unless you have replied to it. Your should have two message inboxes which one of it will be for junk messages.

The "MESSAGE FILTERING" section only has one option -- a switch that allows me to turn on "Filter Unknown Senders". There is no option that says "Unknown & Spam".

Oh. I see. I have to install Hiya, a third party app.

I tried Hiya. It still doesn't show me "Unknown & Spam".

I don't currently have Hiya, but the "unknown & spam" button already gathers junk messages to the separate inbox and doesn't send me notifications.

Patricia.
